Artist Statement
I am a visual artist whose research-led practice is inspired by the natural world, fine art, theological texts, and contemporary world events. I convey my findings and experiences through scanography—using a flatbed scanner as a camera—while incorporating elements of collage and found objects to symbolise current global situations through a theological lens.
My process explores the dialogue between spiritual elements—my emotional and visual impressions—and the technical mechanics of the scanner. By utilising the scanner’s distinct perspective, manipulating the composition with colour-filtered spotlights, and layering objects to create depth, I distort and transform the imagery. Finally, I use digital post-processing to refine the image, balancing colour and tone. Through this technical methodology, I seek to draw parallels between scanography and theology, anchoring my visual output in spiritual theory and phenomenological experience.
Brief Biography
Murray Hamilton is an East Midlands-based visual artist whose work explores the profound connection between creativity and the Divine. His diverse background spans commercial and industrial graphics, a BA in Art History, and MAs in both Art Psychotherapy and Fine Art. Alongside his creative practice, Murray has served as a lay minister for several years, bringing a spiritual dimension to his art.
